posted 04/21/2013 Braintree Squirt B2's win their Conference championship !!
The Squirt B2's had an incredible year this year !!! They only had 1 regular season loss all year and in a Cape Squirt B tournament came in 4th place. They also went all the way to the State Final's !!! They unfortunately did not win that game, but making to that final game was an achievement in itself. On April 7th, they played in the South Shore conference championship game for the B2 Herman division against Canton and won 10-0 !!! The team played very hard and really made strides in playing a team game. We should all be proud of this team. They represented BYH very well this year!!!

posted 03/24/2013 Hockey families missing rink already
It’s March — the time of year when hockey moms across the commonwealth (indeed, across much of North America) start to feel bitter. Not just bitter cold. Bitter, as in tired and a little resentful.
By now, the kids have been playing hockey for six months. And the season that started the first week of September still isn’t over for another several weeks.
For half a year, we’ve been setting our alarms for as early as 4:30 a.m. to get our kids on the ice for 6 a.m. games in Malden or Marlboro. It’s often dark when we get to our first rink of the day, and it is dark when we leave the last.
Like the old Dunkin’ Donuts mascot “Fred the Baker,” we rise dutifully before dawn, staggering down the stairs, muttering “Time to Make the Donuts” before pulling on North Face hats over unbrushed hair and heading out to warm up the car.
The car. More like a gas-guzzling tank, really — because no self-respecting hockey mom would buy a vehicle that fits fewer than three kids and their hockey bags or one without the 4-wheel drive necessary to get the kids to the rink through sleet and snow.
For parents of more than one hockey player, “divide and conquer” is the rule. Often entire weekends go by where husbands and wives talk only by cell phone to find out the score and how the team played.
But like New Englanders who make a pastime of complaining about the weather, hockey parents complain, but we wouldn’t have it any other way.
Why? Because our kids love it, and we enjoy watching them play as much as we love the life lessons hockey teaches.
Like many youth sports, hockey teaches teamwork, sportsmanship and perseverance.
But hockey also toughens kids up and encourages self-reliance and
resilience.
In hockey, 8-year-olds routinely carry equipment bags larger than most of their friends and get dressed by themselves in locker rooms without any parents.
Whether because of the early hours, demanding schedule or the nature of the sport itself, there are no dabblers in youth hockey. This unique commitment creates a bond among teammates — a camaraderie cemented by time in the locker room with nary a grownup in sight and by weekend tournaments in places like Rochester, Lake Placid or Waterville Valley.
In turn, these relationships instill hockey players with a quiet confidence that comes from knowing they have friends and teammates outside of the socially complicated world of school.
Most importantly, all those long car rides give us parents time to find out what’s really going on in the lives of our middle schoolers and to impart those few words of wisdom to a captive audience.
And so, despite our complaining in March, when we’re standing on the sidelines of a rainy soccer field in May, most hockey moms will speak wistfully of the climate-controlled hockey rink. (It’s cold, but it’s consistent — and we know how to dress for it.) In May we will miss the sport that starts on time and ends on time; we will miss the long drives that give us time to connect with our kids one-on-one; and we will miss our friendships with moms from other towns whom we see only seasonally.
So this weekend, when that alarm goes off at 4:30 a.m., I’ll remind myself what we love about this sport, and I’ll say out loud, “Time to make the donuts!”

posted 03/18/2013 Braintree Youth Hockey
2013/2014 Mite Season Format
Changes for the upcoming season are as follows:
U8 Mites will be offered to players born in 2005 & 2006
U6 Mites will be offered to players born in 2007 or later
Players born in 2004 will be moving up to Squirt level
U8 Mites
BYH will be entering several U8 Mite teams into both the South Shore Conference at the A & B level and the Yankee conference at the C level. These teams will play a split season of Half-ice games and full-ice games. The half ice games will be played from the red line to goal line as opposed to the standard cross-ice format. This will run from the start of the season until the end of December and then transition to full-ice (traditional hockey) from January until the end of the season concluding with a playoff tournament. All 2005 & 2006 birth year players who register and tryout will be placed on a U8 Mite team and play this format. U6 (2007 & after) cannot register and play at this level
U6 Mites
U6 Mites will play cross-ice for the entire season. We will either enter our cross-ice teams into the Yankee conference or run an internal house league with neighboring towns. We will make this decision after registration. All 2007 & after birth year players will be required to register for U6 Mites and placed on a team. These players are not allowed to register for U8 Mites.
Registration is open and both U6 and U8 can register under the regular player registration format.
Tryouts will begin on April 1 st and conclude the following week

posted 01/08/2013 In what many are considering the game of the year to date in 2013, the Braintree Blue (White shirts) Squirt B team traveled to Quincy and won the New Year's Tourney with a stunning 3-2 thriller over none other than the other Braintree Squirt B team ! Both teams won their respective divisions in the tourney brackets and set up the epic championship battle. What unfolded on that frozen sheet of ice that cold New Year's Day will be talked about in the hallowed halls of the Sons of Italy for months to come. Many are comparing it to the Braintree High vs Archbishop Williams game in last century's "Battle on the Canal" in 1983 in which the likes of Googins, Fasano and Rizzo took on the Catholic giant.
The Squirt B's skated in what was an unbelievable game with a final score of 3-2. The game was back and forth, a see saw battle played out in front of the assembled masses. Posts were hit, kids were flying, and whistles were blowing right down to the last second of play. An epic battle that saw two great teams go at it and representing Braintree in the finals with the Squirt B Blue (white shirts) team emerging the victor !!!
In an interview immediately after the game aired on ESPN, coach Jim Lockhart responded to a question from the press about what the team and the game meant to him, "These kids have worked hard in the offseason, in practice and anytime we asked these boys to work harder they give us more than we thought they could. Other than the day I met my wife and perhaps the birth of maybe one of my kids, this ranks up there as one of life's great moments...."
Congrats to both teams!!

Dear BYH Hockey families,
I am excited to announce to you today that the non-profit foundation that my wife Stacey and I founded, called Transplant Foundation of New England, is now up and running.
As you may know, I received a new heart, and liver on March 24th, 2012. This life changing and miraculous event serves as the driving force behind our foundation. We were so appreciative of the overwhelming support from our family and friends, that we decided to make it our mission, to help others who will travel on this similar “transplant” journey.
To learn more about our foundation, go to: www.transplantfoundationofnewengland.org.
We greatly appreciate any donations that you can give to TF of NE. Your generosity will lessen the burden of the enormous medical expenses, and help ease the mind of the transplant patient as they go through this long and comprehensive process. Your gift will also help the Family members, who struggle with this difficult journey on a daily basis, and trust that your assistance will make a huge difference in their lives.
Thank you for all your support and friendship,
John Morelli
